The idea that machines could think traces back to Alan Turing’s 1950 paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” which asked whether a machine could convincingly imitate a human in conversation. Early chatbots like ELIZA in the 1960s demonstrated that simple, scripted dialogue could elicit strong human responses. Philosophers such as John Searle argued that passing the Turing Test does not imply genuine understanding and introduced thought experiments such as the Chinese Room and the philosophical zombie to challenge assumptions about machine consciousness. Throughout the late twentieth century, researchers developed cognitive architectures, such as Global Workspace Theory, and projects, such as LIDA, that attempted to emulate aspects of human cognition. The rise of deep learning in the 2010s shifted the focus toward performance, yet speculation about machine consciousness persisted. By the 2020s, transformer-based language models such as GPT 3, GPT 4, and their multimodal successors sparked renewed public interest in whether scaling up neural networks could inadvertently create something like a mind.
Defining Self-Awareness
Self-awareness (noun) … The conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires; the ability to recognize oneself as an individual distinct from others and from the surrounding environment.
Self-awareness involves more than intelligence or complex behavior. Core components include:
Subjective experience … the felt qualities of phenomena (qualia) such as the redness of red or the sensation of pain.
Continuity of self … a persistent sense of identity over time, linking past, present, and anticipated future.
Metacognition … the ability to think about one’s own thoughts, evaluate them, and adjust behavior accordingly.
Agency … having goals, desires, or motivations that drive actions.
Current AI systems do not exhibit these attributes. They can predict words or actions based on patterns, but they do not possess feelings, an autobiographical narrative, internal reflection, or desires.
