Claude Pro vs Max vs Ultra: Pick the Plan for Your Limits

For Claude Pro vs Max vs Ultra, the right plan depends on which limit you keep hitting. As of November 2026, Pro costs $20 a month in the US. Max costs $100 for 5x Pro's usage, both per five-hour session and per week. Ultra costs $200 for 10x Pro's weekly usage, with no five-hour limit once your account is verified.

Hit a cap now and then? Turn on usage credits. Hit the same cap most weeks? Upgrade.

Watch for one naming trap. Ultra is the plan that used to be called Max 20x, but Anthropic now describes it as 10x Pro's weekly usage, not 20x. Everything below comes from Anthropic's own pricing page and Help Center articles.

What do Claude Pro, Max and Ultra each include?

As of November 2026, Anthropic's Pro, Max and Ultra plans differ on three things: price, whether a five-hour limit applies, and how much weekly usage you get compared with Pro. Max and Ultra also include Fable, which Anthropic calls its top model, for up to half your weekly limit. Both also come with a monthly API credit.

PlanPrice per monthFive-hour limitWeekly usageFableMonthly API creditBest for
Pro$20 (US)YesBaselinePay-as-you-go with usage credits from the startNot listed for ProEveryday writing, email and research that rarely hits a cap
Max$100Yes, at 5x Pro5x ProUp to 50% of your weekly limit, included$100People who keep hitting Pro's caps, in short bursts or across the week
Ultra$200, monthly onlyNone for verified accounts10x ProUp to 50% of your weekly limit, included$200All-day heavy use, often in Claude Code, where the five-hour clock or Max's weekly cap gets in the way

Two things the table can't tell you:

  • How many messages you get. Anthropic's pricing page says "there's no fixed message count." Per the Pro Help Center page, your allowance shifts with message length, attached files, conversation length, and the model or feature you use.
  • What "5x" or "10x" means in absolute terms. The multipliers are only relative to Pro. Anthropic doesn't publish message counts or token budgets for any plan.

Do bigger plans get you a discount on usage?

Not on weekly usage, going by Anthropic's own multipliers. Divide each price by its weekly multiplier and every plan lands on $20 per Pro-sized week of usage: Pro is $20 for 1x, Max is $100 for 5x, and Ultra is $200 for 10x (US prices).

Pro, Max and Ultra each work out to $20 per Pro-sized week of usage
Moving up buys a bigger tank, not a cheaper fill-up.

So moving up doesn't buy weekly usage in bulk. It buys a higher ceiling. Fable is also included instead of pay-as-you-go, and on Ultra you get freedom from the five-hour clock. Think of it like a phone plan with the same price per gigabyte: you're paying for a bigger tank, not a cheaper fill-up.

Is Claude Ultra the same as the old Max 20x?

Yes on the plan, no on the number. According to Anthropic's Ultra plan Help Center article, the Max 20x plan is now called Ultra, and existing Max 20x subscribers moved over automatically with no price change. The same article describes Ultra as "10 times the Pro plan's usage every week."

So don't plan your work around "20x." Plan around 10x Pro per week. Anthropic's articles don't explain how the old 20x label lines up with today's description.

Two more details that trip people up:

  • The plan still called Max is the 5x one, and it keeps its five-hour limit. Anthropic's Max page lists a five-hour limit, a weekly limit across all models, and a separate weekly Fable limit.
  • Ultra is monthly only. Anthropic says it's "currently available as a monthly subscription only."

Does Ultra really have no usage limit?

No. As of November 2026, Ultra drops only the five-hour limit, and only for verified accounts. Per Anthropic, it still has a weekly limit across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable.

Here is what still applies on Ultra:

  • A weekly limit across all models, set at 10x Pro's weekly usage.
  • A separate weekly Fable limit, inside that weekly limit.
  • A temporary limit while your account isn't verified yet. Anthropic hasn't published how big it is.

Picture a heavy Claude Code user on a verified Ultra account. They can work through a long Monday without a five-hour reset stopping them mid-task. But if they burn through the whole week's allowance by Thursday, the weekly cap still stops them.

How do you know if your Ultra account is verified?

Open Settings > Usage. Per Anthropic, "If you don't see a Current session bar, your account is verified." If you still see that bar, the temporary limit is still in place.

What Anthropic says about verification:

  • It's automatic. Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts "using factors like your account and payment history."
  • There's nothing for you to do. The temporary limit is removed automatically once verification goes through.
  • Your phone number doesn't count. Verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and doesn't remove the temporary limit.

What Anthropic hasn't published: the exact verification criteria or the size of the temporary limit. If you just switched to Ultra and still see a Current session bar, that's expected. It isn't a billing mistake.

Which limit are you hitting, and what should you do about it?

The limit you hit points to the fix. A five-hour limit calls for a bigger session cap (Max) or no session cap (verified Ultra). A weekly limit calls for a higher plan. A Fable weekly limit usually calls for switching models or paying with usage credits.

Here is why moving from Max to Ultra also helps with Fable. Both plans allow Fable for up to half your weekly limit, and Ultra's weekly limit is twice Max's. Half of a bigger week is more Fable.

Should you upgrade or just turn on usage credits?

Upgrade if you consistently hit limits. That's Anthropic's own advice: its Claude Code guide tells Pro users to consider Max, and Max users to consider Ultra, "if you consistently hit limits." For the occasional crunch week, usage credits let you keep working at standard API rates, billed separately from your subscription.

Anthropic's pricing page lists three options when you hit a limit:

  1. Wait for the limit to reset.
  2. Move to a higher plan.
  3. Turn on usage credits (paid plans only) to keep working at standard API rates.

A simple tripwire: cap your credits at the price gap

Usage credits can be capped with a monthly spending cap. Set that cap to the price difference between your plan and the next one:

Set usage credit caps at $80 on Pro or $100 on Max, then upgrade if hit
If you hit the cap most months, you're already paying for the upgrade.
  • On Pro: cap at $80, the gap between Pro ($20) and Max ($100).
  • On Max: cap at $100, the gap between Max ($100) and Ultra ($200).

If you hit that cap most months, you're already spending what the upgrade costs. Upgrading would raise your limits instead of billing you per use.

This is a practical rule, not an exact break-even. Anthropic doesn't publish plan allowances in tokens or messages, so there's no clean way to compare a dollar of credits with a dollar of plan.

How to turn usage credits on

According to Anthropic's usage credits Help Center article:

  1. Go to Settings > Usage and click "Enable."
  2. Prepay for credits.
  3. Set a monthly spending cap.

Credits only start once a limit is fully used. That can be any five-hour session limit, your weekly limit, or (on Max and Ultra) your Fable weekly limit. Charges show up on your bill separately from your subscription.

What is the weekly Fable limit, and who gets it?

The weekly Fable limit applies on Max and Ultra. As of November 2026, it lets you spend up to 50% of your weekly usage limit on Fable models at no extra cost. On Pro, Fable runs on pay-as-you-go usage credits from the start.

Three details matter here:

  • It's a share, not a bonus. Fable comes out of your regular weekly limit, and Anthropic says you "can never use more than your weekly limit." Spend half your week on Fable, and everything else has to fit in the other half.
  • Fable burns faster. Per Anthropic, Fable models use up your limits faster than other Claude models.
  • When it runs out, you can keep using Fable with usage credits, or switch to another Claude model and stay within your plan.

A practical habit: save Fable for the hard jobs, like a tricky contract summary or a gnarly bug. Use other models for routine drafts and quick questions.

Do Claude and Claude Code share the same limit?

Yes. Anthropic says your activity on Claude's web, desktop and mobile apps and in Claude Code "all draws from the same pool." Claude Code is included in all paid plans and shares your plan's usage limits.

In practice, a morning spent refactoring in Claude Code eats into the same allowance you'll want for drafting client emails that afternoon. If you code with Claude Code and also chat a lot, size your plan for both combined. Anthropic's Claude Code guide specifically suggests Max for Pro users who consistently hit limits and need more capacity for larger code repositories.

Can you use the monthly API credits in the Claude app?

No. The monthly API credit is $100 on Max and $200 on Ultra. Anthropic says it can't be used in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork, and it can't pay for usage credits either.

Instead, the credit is for building Claude into your own apps and agents with the Claude API on the Claude Platform. Per Anthropic, you don't need to add a card to claim or use it.

If you never build anything, treat the credit as a bonus. Don't count it as extra chat time when you compare plans.

Which plan should you be on?

Pick this if:

  • Pro ($20): you mostly write, research and answer email, and you rarely see a limit. You can use usage credits for Fable or the odd heavy day.
  • Max ($100): you hit Pro's five-hour or weekly limit most weeks, or you want Fable included rather than paid per use.
  • Ultra ($200): you're on Max and keep hitting its weekly cap, or the five-hour limit keeps cutting into long Claude Code sessions. If your account isn't verified yet, a temporary limit applies until it is.

Do this next:

  1. Notice which limit stops you over your next two busy weeks: five-hour, weekly, or Fable.
  2. Turn on usage credits in Settings > Usage, with a monthly cap set to the price gap to the next plan.
  3. Upgrade only if you hit that cap regularly. If you're on Ultra and still see a Current session bar, give verification time instead.
