To delete what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini remember about you, you usually have to clear two things: the memory and the chat it came from. In ChatGPT and Claude, deleting a chat doesn't automatically remove a separate memory built from it, so you also clear the memory in settings. Gemini works the other way round: your past chats are what it remembers, so you delete those chats and disconnect any app that holds the same information.
How do I delete what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini remember about me?
As of October 2026, ChatGPT and Claude each keep a separate memory store that you edit in settings, while Gemini remembers by drawing on your past chats, so you delete chats in Gemini Apps Activity. The table below puts the three vendors' own help pages side by side.
| Assistant | Where to look (as of October 2026) | What deleting removes | What can stay behind | Private mode for one-off chats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Settings > Personalization > Memory | A deleted saved memory is gone from memory. Turning off Reference chat history schedules remembered chat info for deletion within 30 days | The original chat, files saved in Library or a Space, and logs of deleted memories for up to 30 days | Temporary chat |
| Claude | Settings > Your Claude > Manage, where memory is listed as Topics | A deleted Topic. Reset memory permanently deletes all memories, including project memories | Deleting a conversation leaves the memory entries generated from it | Incognito chat |
| Gemini | Gemini Apps Activity | The chats that contain the information | Copies in connected apps, a short delay before personalization updates, and chats reviewed by humans | Temporary chat |
Menus move around a lot. OpenAI says memory controls "can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace settings," so a setting described in the help pages may not appear on every account.
If I delete a chat, is the memory deleted too?
No, not in ChatGPT or Claude. As of October 2026, both vendors' help pages say deleting a chat does not automatically remove a separate memory built from it.
Think of it like a doctor's notes. Shredding the appointment recording doesn't erase what the doctor wrote in your file.
- ChatGPT: OpenAI says saved memories "are stored separately from chat history" and that deleting the original chat "does not automatically delete a separate saved memory."
- Claude: Anthropic says that when a conversation is deleted, even under a retention period, the memory entries generated from it are not removed with it.
- Gemini: The reverse case. Google tells you to delete the chats themselves, because those chats are what Gemini draws on.
The habit to build: in ChatGPT and Claude, clear the memory list first, then delete the chat. In Gemini, the chat is the thing to delete.
How do I see and delete what ChatGPT remembers?
As of October 2026, ChatGPT shows its saved memories under Settings > Personalization > Memory, where you can delete individual entries. A separate setting called Reference chat history lets ChatGPT draw on past conversations, and that one works differently.
So on ChatGPT, "memory" really means two things.
Saved memories
These are explicit notes, like "prefers short emails" or "has a dog called Biscuit." You read them in the Memory screen and delete the ones you don't want. OpenAI notes it may keep logs of deleted saved memories "for up to 30 days for safety and debugging purposes."
Reference chat history
This is ChatGPT pulling context from your older chats. OpenAI says this information "can change as ChatGPT updates what is most useful to remember," so it isn't a fixed entry the way a saved memory is.
If you turn Reference chat history off, OpenAI says the remembered information is scheduled for deletion within 30 days. The catch: "The original chats remain in your history unless you delete them."
The full ChatGPT wipe checklist
Say you once told ChatGPT about a health worry, and now it keeps working it into your meal plans. OpenAI's guidance means a full removal can take all three of these:
- Delete the saved memory in Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Delete the chat where you mentioned it.
- Delete any related files you saved in Library or a Space.

How do I make Claude forget something?
As of October 2026, Claude lists everything it remembers as Topics under Settings > Your Claude > Manage, and you can read, edit or delete each one. Deleting a Topic removes that memory; deleting the conversation it came from does not.
Anthropic says memory is on by default for Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans on the web, Claude Desktop and Claude Mobile. If you use Claude on one of those plans and never touched the setting, it may well have been taking notes.
Two handy extras:
- Edit instead of delete. If a Topic is mostly right but one detail is wrong (say, your old job title), fix it rather than wipe it.
- Export to check. Anthropic says "all memory data is included in data exports," so an export gives you a full copy to review.
What's the difference between turning Claude memory off and resetting it?
Reset memory is the nuclear option: Anthropic says it "permanently deletes all memories including project memories." Turning memory off for a single chat is the light touch, and you have to do it "before you send the first message."
That second rule is easy to miss. It works like telling a waiter about an allergy: it has to happen before the order goes in, not after the plate arrives.
If you use Claude Projects, Reset clears their memories too. Our comparison of Claude Projects vs ChatGPT Projects vs Gemini Gems explains what those workspaces hold.
How do I delete what Gemini knows about me?
As of October 2026, Google says that to delete something Gemini remembered about you, you delete all chats containing that information from Gemini Apps Activity. If the information also lives in a connected app, you disconnect that app too.
The Google help page we checked doesn't describe a separate memory list to edit, which is the big difference from ChatGPT and Claude. Managing your chats is the control:
- Ask first. Google says that to check whether Gemini used your past chats, "just ask Gemini." Try "Did you use my past chats for that answer?"
- Delete the chats. In Gemini Apps Activity, remove every chat that mentions the thing you want gone.
- Disconnect the app if needed. Google warns: "If you only delete the chats, Gemini might still find the info in the connected app." If your old address also sits in a connected app, delete the chats and disconnect that app.
- Give it a moment. Google says there "might be a short delay" before a deleted chat stops shaping your responses.
You can also let Gemini clean up for you. By default, Gemini Apps activity older than 18 months is auto-deleted, and Google lets you change that to 3 or 36 months.
Can I ask one sensitive question without it being remembered?
Yes. As of October 2026, ChatGPT and Gemini offer Temporary chat and Claude offers Incognito chat, each built for one-off conversations. Claude's and Gemini's private modes still keep chats for a while, so check how long before you rely on them.
| Private mode | How long it's kept | Creates or updates memory? | Used to train models? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Temporary chat | Not stated on OpenAI's memory page | No, per OpenAI, "even with personalization on" | Not covered in the sources we checked | A one-off question you want kept out of ChatGPT's memory |
| Claude Incognito chat | 30 days by default, and not shown in chat history | Not covered in the sources we checked | Not covered in the sources we checked | A Claude chat you don't want sitting in your history |
| Gemini Temporary chat | 72 hours with your account | Not covered in the sources we checked | No, per Google | A quick Gemini question you don't want used for training |
A few details worth knowing:
- ChatGPT asks you to decide up front. Before starting a temporary chat, you choose whether it uses your existing memories, custom instructions and plugins.
- Saving undoes the privacy. OpenAI says saving a temporary chat "converts it to a regular chat."
- Claude's mode includes the Free plan. Anthropic says incognito chats are available on Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans.
Even in a private mode, some things are better never typed at all. Our guide to what not to paste into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini covers which ones.
Does deleting memory delete my data from the company's servers?
Not always, and not instantly. As of October 2026, OpenAI may keep logs of deleted ChatGPT memories for up to 30 days, and Google keeps Gemini chats that human reviewers have looked at even after you delete your activity.
What each vendor says stays behind:
- ChatGPT: Deleted saved memories may sit in logs for up to 30 days, according to OpenAI's Memory FAQ.
- Claude: Anthropic says Reset memory permanently deletes all memories, but deleting a conversation does not remove the memory entries generated from it. Details are on Anthropic's memory help page.
- Gemini: Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says chats reviewed by human reviewers, plus related data like your language, device type, location info or feedback, "are not deleted when you delete your activity." Google keeps them for up to three years.
The practical takeaway: deleting the right things (the memory, the chat, and any connected-app copy) is how the vendors' help pages say to stop the assistant using the information, sometimes after a short delay. It doesn't mean the company has erased every copy that day.
Do this next
Set aside a few minutes and run this once per assistant.
- Look. Open ChatGPT's Memory screen and Claude's Topics, and ask Gemini whether it used your past chats. Delete anything you'd rather it didn't know.
- Clear the source. Delete the chats behind those memories. In ChatGPT, also check Library and Spaces. In Gemini, disconnect any app that holds the same detail.
- Change the habit. For the next sensitive question, open ChatGPT Temporary chat, Claude Incognito chat or Gemini Temporary chat before you type the first word, and set Gemini's auto-delete to the shortest window that suits you.
Menu paths and retention periods were checked on OpenAI, Anthropic and Google's help pages in October 2026; they change often.
